McGill Network for Innovation in Biofuels & Bioproducts

Welcome

McNIBB Building sustainability

Two of the most significant challenges to humanity in the 21st century will be fossil fuel limitations and climate change.  Biofuels has the capacity to help in both cases and the recent breakthroughs in understanding plant genomics offers new possibilities in exploiting plant biomass for these purposes.  A more sustainable and biobased society is possible. In a bio-based economy, renewable bioresources are the feedstock and economic growth is linked with sustainable development.

Mission

Our mission is to promote, facilitate and support research and innovation related to responsible and sustainable conversion of biomass to biofuels and bioproducts to contribute to building a viable bioeconomy under McGill University’s leadership.

McNIBB focuses on bringing together university, government and industry participants from across Canada to enhance and transfer biofuels and bioproducts research knowledge into technologies and products.  The Centre aims to position McGill as a leader in biofuels, bioproducts and bioprocesses innovation while emphasizing the need for collaboration across faculties, schools and departments, as well as with other universities in Quebec, other national, international research institutions and industry to create the innovation chain that will fuel the development of a bio-based Canadian economy.

Areas of research

The centre operates in three main research areas:

  • Biofuels and Sustainable Energy;
  • Bioproducts and bioprocessing;
  • Sustainable bio-industrial processes and society.
